Renowned short story writer, Alice Munro, who earlier this year announced her retirement, yesterday won the Nobel Prize for Literature. She has been called the “master of the contemporary short story” and is the 13th woman to win the award.
The New York Times States: [quote]The Nobel, one of the most prestigious and lucrative prizes in the world, is given to a writer for a lifetime’s body of work, rather than a single novel, short story or collection. The winner receives eight million Swedish kronor, or about $1.2 million.”[/quote]
As an advocate for seeing short stories as art, Munro has certainly done her part in putting this form of writing on the map.
