5 Events You Can’t Miss at the Sydney Writers’ Festival

Here at Writer’s Edit HQ, The Sydney Writers’ Festival is one of our favourite events of the year. We’ve been eagerly striking out the days on our calendar, waiting for the opening address and everything that follows. Throughout May, our writers will be covering over 15 events that you can read about right here. But for now, before all the action starts, we’ve put together a list of five events you simply cannot miss. Check them out below…


1. Writers on Writing: Malouf and Mendelsohn on the Classics

When: May 21st, 11.30am

Where: Roslyn Packer Theatre (formerly Sydney Theatre), 22 Hickson Road, Walsh Bay

What: American memoirist and critic Daniel Mendelsohn and Australian writer and poet David Malouf share a deep love for the classic novels. Together, they sit down to discuss why these narratives are set to stand the test of time, and continue to hold such power today.

2. Stories That Defined a Decade

When: May 22nd, 6.30pm

Where: City Recital Hall Angel Place, Angel Place, Sydney

What: ABC’s Mark Colvin speaks to three writers who have found compelling stories in the decade’s most defining headlines so far. Far more than just attention to the click-bait driven ‘news’ stories, these writers “followed their obsession at all costs, and changed the way we look at the world”.

3. Evie Wyld: All the Birds, Singing

When: May 20th, 7.00pm

Where: Pioneer Room – Castle Hill Library and Community Center, Level 1, Corner Castle Street and Pennant Street, Castle Hill

What: We were blown away by All the Birds, Singing, so it’s only natural that we’re incredibly keen to hear this talented author speak. Miles Franklin Award winner, Evie Wyld talks about her novel and her writing process.

4. Forest For the Trees: Writers & Publishing in 2015

When: May 21st, 10.00am

Where: State Library of NSW, Metcalfe Auditorium, Macquarie Street Wing, Macquarie Street, Sydney

What: Presented by the NSW Writers’ Centre, this event investigates the current state of writing and publishing in Australia. Offering insights from writers, publishers and industry representatives, this one is not to be missed!

5. Helen Garner: How Can We Write About Darkness?

When: May 21st, 8.30pm

Where: City Recital Hall Angel Place, Angel Place, Sydney

What: Award-winning author, Helen Garner speaks about the darker side to humanity, and how we can capture this in our writing. In this talk, Garner shares some of her many sources of inspiration for her non-fiction.
