Kindling Vol. II Submissions Call-out

That's right - Kindling Volume II is happening this year! For those of you who don't know, Kindling is our annual anthology of creative writing and writing advice. You can check out our first volume here, and the photos from our 2014 launch here. Have you got a special piece of writing for us?

We’re looking for short stories, creative non-fiction, essays on the writing and publishing industries, writing advice and poetry.

FICTION:

  • Word limit is 4000 words. Though if you feel particularly passionate about a longer piece, you have the option of pitching it to one of our editors.
  • We will NOT be reviewing any romance, fantasy or trend-based writing (eg. no vampires, zombies or 50 Shades spin-offs).

POETRY:

  • 1.5 line spacing
  • Pt. 12, Times New Roman font
  • No more than 3 poems to be submitted per poet
  • Length is flexible

CREATIVE NON-FICTION:

  • Word limit is 4000 words. Though if you feel particularly passionate about a longer piece, you have the option of pitching it to one of our editors.
  • This could be something that has happened to you personally or a thoroughly researched historical event.
  • We’re also enthusiastic about personal writing/publishing experiences.
  • This will undergo a thorough check in terms of legal issues and accuracy.

ESSAYS:

  • Word limit is 4000 words. Though if you feel particularly passionate about a longer piece, you have the option of pitching it to one of our editors.
  • These must be about the writing/publishing industries for eg. ‘The Death of the Print Book’, ‘The Value of Literary Prizes for Writers’, 'The Age of the Small Press' etc. are all suitable topics for this category.
  • References must be included (Harvard referencing).

WRITING ADVICE:

  • Please pitch your ideas to us before sending through your full-length article.
  • Keep in mind that the word count is 4000 words.
  • References must be included (Harvard referencing).
  • We’re after informative, relevant and in-depth advice articles.
  • ‘How to Write a Synopsis for Your Novel’, ‘How to Craft Your Short Story’ are all appropriate examples.

DETAILS TO NOTE:

  • Submission does not guarantee publication
  • Shortlist does not guarantee publication
  • Feedback will not be provided to unsuccessful applicants
  • We are unable to provide payment for submissions
  • Successful pieces will undergo a thorough editorial process
  • Shortlisting will take place over the following months.

DEADLINE:

Please submit your work by the 31st of May via the submissions page here.

All submissions must be sent as a Word document, with Times New Roman font, double spacing, and page numbers (poetry formatting differs, see details above). 

In the subject of your email, please state the category you are submitting to, eg. FICTION SUBMISSION – so your submission is sent directly to the appropriate editor. Your work will not be read otherwise.

We do not accept first drafts or previously published work.
