Elizabeth Jolley Short Story Prize

Australian Book Review welcomes entries to its annual Elizabeth Jolley Short Story Prize. Entries are open to writers worldwide and should be between 2000 and 5000 words. Entry fees range from $15–25AUD. First prize is $7000AUD and there are supplementary prizes of $2000, $1000 and 3 x $850 commendation awards. Entries close 10th April.

EVENT Non-Fiction Contest

Canadian literary magazine EVENT invites entries up to 5000 words for its 2017 Non-Fiction Contest. $1500CAD in prizes plus publication on offer. Entry costs $34.95 and includes a subscription to EVENT. Entries close 15th April.

Rachel Funari Prize For Fiction 2017

Lip Magazine invites entries for the 2017 Rachel Funari Prize for Fiction. Open to all Australian women, female-identifying and non-binary writers. Entries up to 2000 words must address the theme of 'rebirth' (preferably with a focus on women's stories). Prizes include cash, publication, book packs and more. Entries close 21st April.

Stringybark Seven Deadly Sins Award

Stringybark Stories invites short stories up to 1500 words addressing one or more of the seven deadly sins. Prizes include cash, publication, and print and ebooks. Open internationally. Entries close 23rd April.

Bath Novel Award

The Bath Novel Award is now open for submissions of unsigned novels written for adults or young adults. Entries must consist of your novel's first 5000 words and a one-page synopsis. Winner receives £2000 and one shortlisted writer receives a £500 voucher for editorial/mentoring services. Entry fee is £25 per novel. Entries close 24th April.

Granta Magazine Non-Fiction Submissions

Renowned literary magazine Granta opens its non-fiction submissions this month. Original non-fiction on an topic is welcome and will be considered for both print and online submissions. There is no set maximum or minimum length, though most pieces run between 3000 and 6000 words. Submissions open 24th April and close 24th May.

The 39th Nimrod Literary Awards

Nimrod, an international journal of prose and poetry, is currently open for submissions for the Katherine Anne Porter Prize for Fiction and the Pablo Neruda Prize for Poetry. Entries must comprise up to 7500 words of fiction for the Katherine Anne Porter Prize and 3–10 pages of poetry for the Pablo Neruda Prize. First prize for both awards is $2000USD and publication; second prize is $1000 and publication. Entry fee is $20 (includes subscription). Open to U.S. residents only. Entries close 30th April.

The Irene Adler Prize

Lucas Aykroyd is awarding a $1000USD scholarship to a woman pursuing a degree in journalism, creative writing, or literature at a recognised post-secondary institution in the U.S. or Canada. Entries take the form of a 500-word essay on one of three defined topics and close 30th April.

Tom Howard/John H. Reid Fiction & Essay Contest

Winning Writers invites entries to its annual Tom Howard/John H. Reid Fiction & Essay Contest. Short stories and essays up to 6000 words are accepted. $1500USD each will be awarded to the top story and top essay. Ten Honorable Mentions will receive $100 each and the top 12 entries will be published online. Entry fee is $18USD. Entries close 30th April.

The Writer's Workout 2017 Writer's Games

The Writer's Workout invites writers to register for the 2017 Writer's Games, which will begin in May. The Games consist of regular writing prompt competitions held over two months. Individual event winners will be published in an anthology and overall winners are eligible for a number of prizes. Registrations close 30th April.

Alpine Fellowship Annual Symposium Writing Prize

The Alpine Fellowship is now open for entries to its writing prize. The best piece of writing in response to the theme of the Alpine Fellowship Annual Symposium will be awarded £3000 cash and an invitation to the Venice symposium. Two runners-up will also be invited to the symposium. Open to all ages, nationalities and genres, with a 2500 word limit. Entries close 1st May.

Bath Short Story Award

Short stories up to 2200 words are invited for the Bath Short Story Award. Open theme. First prize is £1000, 2nd £200 and 3rd £100, with supplementary prizes also on offer. £8 entry fee. Entries close 1st May.

Questions Writing Prize

Writers between 18–30 years of age are invited to submit entries to the 2017 Questions Writing Prize. Entries may be fiction or non-fiction on any topic, between 1500 and 2000 words. Prize is $2000AUD and publication. Entries close 1st May.

Raymond Carver Short Story Contest

From 1st April, Carve Magazine will be accepting submissions for the Raymond Carver Short Story Contest. Entries must be short stories (literary fiction only) up to 10,000 words. Publication and $2500USD in prize money available across five prizes. Entry fee is $17 for online submissions and $15 for mailed submissions. Entries close 15th May.

The Big Issue Fiction Submissions

Australian magazine The Big Issue is currently open for submissions to its annual fiction edition. Entries of short stories from all genres are invited from writers of any age. Stories should be between 300 and 3000 words. Entry is free (postal only, no online entries) and each author published will receive $500AUD. Entries close 5th June.
