VU Short Story Prize for New Writers

Victoria University and Overland seek short fiction by new Australian/New Zealand writers of up to 3000 words in length. First prize is $6000AUD; two runners-up will receive $1000. All three winners will be published in Overland. $20 entry fee. Entries close 11th June.

Richard & Judy's Search For A Bestseller

The Richard and Judy Book Club and WH Smith welcomes entries for the 2018 'Search for a Bestseller' competition. The contest seeks a first-time author with the potential to become a bestselling writer. Unpublished authors can submit 10,000 words of original fiction aimed at adults, as well as a synopsis of the full novel. Winner receives a £30,000 publishing deal with Bonnier Zaffre and specialist advice from literary agency Furniss Lawton. Entries close 14th June.

Words with JAM First Page Competition

Words with JAM is seeking the most captivating first page (up to 400 words) of a story. Entries can be from a novel published, unpublished, partly written, or simply a first page written purely for the competition. First prize is £500; second prize £100; third prize £50. First entry costs £6; each entry thereafter costs £4. Entries close 15th June.

Impress Prize

The 2018 Impress Prize opens for entries on 1st May. Open to fiction and non-fiction submissions from all writers who have not been traditionally published. Entries consist of a book proposal and a sample chapter of no more than 6000 words. Winner receives a print and ebook publishing contract with Impress Books and a £500 advance. £25 entry fee. Entries close 29th June.

Audio Arcadia’s Science Fiction/Fantasy Short Story Competition

Audio Arcadia welcomes fantasy and/or science fiction stories up to 5000 words for its Short Story Competition. The ten winning stories will be published as a paperback and eBook and made available for sale on Lulu, Amazon and other relevant retail websites. Entry fee for one submission is £5.50/$8.50USD/€7.50. Entries close 30th June.

Blue Pencil Agency First Novel Award

Blue Pencil Agency Literary Consultants welcome entries to their 2018 First Novel Award. Unrepresented and unpublished authors are welcome to submit entries for a novel in any adult fiction genre. Entries must include the first chapter of a novel up to 5000 words, a 300-word synopsis and a cover letter with details on your writing career. Winner receives £1,000 and introduction to a literary agent. Runner-up receives £250 and manuscript review. Entry fee £20. Entries close 30th June.

Glimmer Train Short Story Award for New Writers

Glimmer Train Press is open to entries of short stories from emerging writers. Most entries run from 800 to 4000 words, but any lengths up to 12,000 are welcome. First prize is $2500USD and publication in Glimmer Train Stories; second prize is $500; third prize is $300. $18 entry fee. Entries close 30th June.




Michael Terence Publishing Short Story Competition

Michael Terence Publishing is open for entries to its Short Story Competition. New authors who have never had a full-length work published are invited to submit stories up to 3000 words. First prize is £300; second prize is £200; third prize is £100. All three winners will be published in an anthology. Entry fee is £5. Entries close 30th June.

MNDA Short Story Competition

Claret Press is open for entries to the first MNDA short story competition, with all proceeds going to the Motor Neurone Disease Association. Stories up to 5000 words inspired by themes of physical and/or mental illness will be accepted. Three prize winners will receive £250, £150 and £50 respectively. Entry fee is £6 per story. Entries close 30th June.

North Street Book Prize

Winning Writers is open for entries to its fourth North Street Book Prize. Self-published books in the following categories are eligible: Mainstream/Literary Fiction, Genre Fiction, Creative Nonfiction & Memoir, Poetry and Children's Picture Book. One grand prize winner will receive $3000; the top winner in each category will receive $1000; each will also receive a marketing prize pack. One honourable mention in each category will receive $250. Entries close 30th June.

The Moth International Short Story Prize

The Moth magazine is open for entries to its annual International Short Story Prize. Short stories up to 5000 words are accepted. First prize is €3,000; second prize is a week-long writing retreat at Circle of Misse in France plus €250 travel stipend; and third prize is €1,000. All three winners will be published in The Moth. Entry fee is €12 per story. Entries close 30th June.
