It’s important for writers to read contemporary literature, as well as to be familiar with the house styles of journals they intend on submitting their work to. Subscriptions are a great way for a writer to get their reading fix and scrub up on the competition, as well as keep our well-loved lit journals alive.

Price: Medium.

Notebooks

A simple notebook can be a writer’s best friend. They come in all shapes and sizes, and can be sat on a desk next to a manuscript or popped in a handbag or backpack for on-the-go scribbles. We haven’t met a writer yet who doesn’t have a deep-rooted love for all things stationery!

Price: Cheap.

Books and e-books

Both fiction books and reference books can be great presents for any writer. Reading as much as possible helps hone one’s writing skills, plus, the joy that comes with owning a brand new book is priceless.

Buying a dictionary, thesaurus, or grammar book might seem dull but they really do come in handy. Writers can learn a lot from the technicality of words. And they look pretty fancy on the bookshelf too!

Price: Medium.

Bookmarks

People underestimate the power of a good bookmark. They’re a fundamental part of the tangible reading experience. There are so many kinds that you can personalise, or even make one yourself.

Price: Cheap.

Words

If your budget is tight this Christmas consider giving the gift of writing itself. Short stories and poems can make meaningful and cost-effective presents, and you can use your creative talents to make something truly memorable for that special someone, whether they’re a writer or not.

Priceless.
