The Text Prize for Young Adult and Children's Writing

The Text Prize is awarded annually to the best manuscript written for children or young adults by an Australian/New Zealand author. Entries must be between 20,000 and 120,000 words. Winner receives a publishing contract with Text and a $10,000 advance against royalties. Entry fee is $25. Entries close 2nd February.

Newcastle Short Story Award

Entries are now open for the 2018 Newcastle Short Story Award. Open theme; 2000 word limit. Open to Australian citizens or permanent residents. First prize $3000AUD; second $1700; third $1000. Prizes for highly commended, commended and best local entries. $16.50 entry fee. Entries close 5th February.

Nelson Algren Literary Award Contest

Submissions for the 2018 Nelson Algren Literary Award are now open. Original short fiction up to 8000 words is accepted. One grand prize winner receives $3500USD; four finalists receive $1000; and five runners-up receive $500 each. All stories will be considered for publication in a digital literary journal. Entries close 7th February.

Bath Flash Fiction Award

The Bath Flash Fiction Award is currently open for entries of flash fiction up to 300 words. £1000 prize for the winner, £300 second and £100 third. Two commendations £30 each. 50 longlisted entrants offered publication in digital and print anthology. Entries close 11th February.

Writers' & Artists' Yearbook Short Story Competition

The Writers' & Artists' Yearbook free annual short story competition is now open for entries. Open theme; stories up to 2000 words accepted. Winning entries will be published online and winners will receive a place on a four- or six-day writing retreat in the UK. Entries close 13th February.

Desperate Literature Short Fiction Prize

Desperate Literature's Short Fiction Prize is awarded to an original work of short fiction under 2000 words. First prize is €1000, a week’s residency at the Civitella Ranieri Foundation, and a consultation with a US literary agent. Two runners-up will receive €250. All winners and shortlisted writers will receive publication. Entry fee is €20 for the first entry and €10 for every further entry. Entries close 14th February.

American Library in Paris Visiting Fellowship

The Visiting Fellowship from the American Library in Paris offers writers and researchers a a $5000 stipend to use in pursuing a creative project in Paris for a month or longer. Applications must include cover letter, biography/CV, referee details, and a description of the project you intend to pursue. Application processing fee is €30. Applications close 15th February.

Words and Brushes Collaboration Five Competition

Words and Brushes seeks short stories between 2000-4000 words, inspired by an artwork of your choice from a provided gallery. Selected stories will be published in an art book that is a collaborative work between writers and artists. Winning story receives $350USD. Entries close 15th February.

Tasmanian Writers' Prize

Forty South Publishing invites Australian and New Zealand residents to enter the 2018 Tasmanian Writers' Prize. Short stories up to 3000 words an island (or island-resonant) theme will be accepted. Winner receives $500AUD and publication in Tasmania 40°South. A selection of the best entries will be published in the Forty South Short Story Anthology 2018. $20 entry fee per story. Entries close 18th February.

1000 Word Challenge

The 1000 Word Challenge is currently open for entries. Stories should be between 750 and 1000 words and must be 'set at a party'. First prize is £100; second prize £50; third prize £25. All winners receive professional editing of their story and publication online. Entry fee is £5 or £10 with feedback. Entries close 28th February.

Booksie Short Story Contest

Booksie is open for entries to its 2017/2018 Short Story Contest. Open to all genres and themes; 5000-word limit. Grand prize is $600USD and runners-up receive $150. Entry fee is $5.95. Entries close 28th February.

Everything Change Climate Fiction Contest

Arizona State University is accepting entries for its Everything Change Climate Fiction Contest. The contest welcomes submissions up to 5000 words in all genres of short fiction, including speculative, realistic, literary, experimental and hybrid forms; all entries must explore the concept of climate change. The winning story will receive $1000USD and nine finalists will receive $50 each. The winner and finalists will be published in an online anthology. Entries close 28th February.

Flash 500 Short Story Competition

The Flash 500 Short Story Competition is an open-themed competition accepting stories between 1000 and 3000 words in all genres. First prize is £500, second £200 and third £100. Entry fee is £7 for one entry, £12 for two, £16 for three and £20 for four. Entries close 28th February.

Hidden River Review Trilogy Award

Entries are now open in each category of the Hidden River Review Trilogy Award: poetry, non-fiction and very short fiction. Entries may consist of up to 25 pages of non-fiction (and a synopsis if submitting a book excerpt); up to 5 poems; or a work of short fiction between 300 and 3000 words. Winners in each category receive $1000USD. Entry fee is $17. Entries close 28th February.

Margery Allingham Short Story Competition

The Margery Allingham Short Story Competition is now open for submissions of unpublished mystery stories up to 3500 words. Winner receives £500 plus two weekend passes to CrimeFest 2019 and a selection of Margery Allingham-related books. Entry fee £12. Entries close 28th February.

Short Story Award for New Writers

Glimmer Train Press is currently seeking entries to its Jan/Feb 2018 Short Story Award for New Writers. Open to writers whose fiction has not appeared in any print publication with a circulation over 5000. Entries up to 12,000 words accepted. First place wins $2500USD and publication; second place $500 and third place $300 (second and third will each receive $700 if selected for publication). Entry fee $18. Entries close 28th February.
