28th Annual Jeffrey E. Smith Editors' Prize

The Missouri Review welcomes entries of fiction, nonfiction and poetry to its Jeffrey E. Smith Editors' Prize. One piece of fiction or nonfiction up to 8500 words or any number of poems up to 10 pages will be accepted. First prize is $5000USD in each category, as well as publication and invitation to a reception and reading. $25 entry fee (includes one-year digital subscription to the Missouri Review). Entries close 1st October.

Mslexia Women’s Fiction Awards

Mslexia is currently open for entries to its 2018 Women's Fiction Awards in the categories of Short Story and Flash Fiction. Short stories between 300–3000 words and flash fiction up to 300 words accepted. First prize for Short Story Competition is £5000, with three finalists each receiving £100; £10 entry fee per story. First prize for Flash Fiction Competition is £500, with three finalists each receiving £50; £5 entry fee per story. All winners receive publication in Mslexia. Entries close 1st October.

Crowvus Christmas Ghost Story Competition

Crowvus Publishing is open for entries to its Christmas Ghost Story Competition. 'Spectral stories' up to 4000 words accepted. First, second and third-placed stories and six highly commended stories will be published in an anthology. Cash prizes are calculated as a percentage of entry fees – first prize is 40%, second is 20% and third is 10%. Entry fee is £3 per story or two stories for £5 (maximum two stories per author). Entries close 12th October.

Talem Press Fantasy Novel Submissions

Our very own fantasy fiction imprint, Talem Press, is now open for submissions! We're looking for full-length fantasy manuscripts – bonus points if they involve unlikely heroines, mysterious magic and out-of-this-world storytelling. Read the guidelines and submit here. Submission period closes 12th October.

At Sea Writers' Residency

At Sea is a twice-yearly writers' residency based in Margate, Kent (UK). Recipients will have use of a historic two-bedroom seafront flat in Margate, as well as a £250 bursary towards expenses and £50 towards train travel. This year's residency theme is novel-writing; applicants should be in the midst of a novel and will need to submit 5000 words plus a synopsis with their application. Applications close 15th October.

Wollongong Writers Festival Short Story Prize

Wollongong Writers Festival invites international entries to its Short Story Prize. Short fiction up to 2500 words relating to the theme 'feeding time' is welcome. First prize is $1000AUD; a highly commended entry will receive $300; both receive publication in Mascara Literary Review. $15 entry fee. Entries close 15th October.

Arkansas International Emerging Writer's Prize

The Arkansas International is open for entries to its Emerging Writer's Prize. Entries of short fiction up to 7500 words from writers who haven't yet published a full-length book are accepted. Winner receives $1000USD and publication. $20 entry fee (includes one-year subscription to The Arkansas International). Entries close 20th October.

Dinesh Allirajah Prize for Short Fiction

Comma Press and the University of Central Lancashire invite entries from residents of the UK for the annual Dinesh Allirajah Prize for Short Fiction. Entries should be short stories between 2000–6000 words on the theme of 'scent'. Winner receives £500 and all 10 shortlisted authors will be featured in an ebook anthology. Entries close 26th October.

ELLE Writing Competition

ELLE magazine welcomes entries from Australian/New Zealand residents for its 2018 writing competition. Seeking 'fresh, modern, topical tales that may or may not riff on pop culture', up to 4000 words. Winner receives $5000AUD and publication in ELLE. Two runners-up receive a prize pack from Hachette Australia worth $200. Entries close 26th October.

The RW Short Story Prize

Retreat West welcomes entries for its 2018 Short Story Prize. Stories may be in any genre (except children's and erotica), between 1500–5000 words. First prize £400; second £250; third £150; shortlisted £20. All winning and shortlisted stories published in anthology. £10 entry fee for each story. Entries close 28th October.

Flash 500 Novel Opening Chapter & Synopsis Competition

Flash 500 is open for entries to its Novel Opening Chapter & Synopsis Competition. Submit an unpublished opening chapter up to 3000 words, plus a one-page synopsis. First prize is £500; runner up receives £200. Entry fee is £10/€13. Entries close 31st October.

Iceland Writers Retreat Alumni Award

Held from 3rd–7th April 2019, the Iceland Writers Retreat involves series of small-group writing workshops and cultural tours designed to introduce participants to Iceland's rich literary heritage. Three full and two partial scholarships are offered through the Alumni Award. Applications close 31st October.

Buzz Words Short Story Prize

Buzz Words, the twice monthly online magazine for those in the children's book industry, is open for entries to its inaugural Short Story Prize for Australian adults writing for children. Stories should be for children aged 8 to 11 years. 1500-word limit. First prize winner receives $1000AUD; second prize receives $500. $10 entry fee. Entries close 31st December.
